How to minimise contamination risk by choosing the right bearing

Are you doing all you can to protect against contamination and reduce the frequency of product recalls? Take a read of our latest article on “Contamination in the food and drink sector” to see how you can help minimise risk by choosing the right bearing for your food and drink application.

One of the biggest problems faced within the food and drink industry is the risk of contaminants found in and around mounted seals. To address this, SKF Food Line bearings feature a patented sealing system. Featuring a back seal that sits statically against the housing and dynamically against the shaft, and an end cover that fully seals against the housing on the front side patented sealing system, process materials are prevented from entering the bearings and causing contamination issues.

However, regardless of how well a component is made, things can and do occasionally break. So, to lower the risk of contamination caused from missing parts, SKF Food Line bearings, which comply with FDA and EC recommendations, are coloured blue for optical detectability.

Lastly, often faced with high pressure washdowns, lubrication can also present a challenge. Here, if lubrication is washed out of bearings and needs replacing, there’s a risk of leakage. To address this issue, SKF Food Line bearings units are lubricated for life with NSF approved, food grade grease.

The food and drink industry is the UK’s largest manufacturing sector, with no signs of slowing down, so selecting the right bearing technology is key when it comes to preventing contamination without compromising on production efficiency.
