O-rings are closed rings with a circular cross-section. They are manufactured by a vulcanisation process from moulding tools as a complete ring. The sealing function of an O-ring is achieved by the deformation of the cross-section when installed and compressed in the housing. The O-ring can be compressed radially or axially in the mounting housing. Under operating conditions, the pressure exerted by the medium reinforces the sealing function, as under pressure the elastomeric material acts as an incompressible liquid.
