Work coats

Essential in industry, food processing, healthcare, and service sectors, work coats are versatile professional garments designed to combine hygiene, comfort, and lightweight body protection. They help preserve cleanliness in the workplace, protect everyday clothing from dirt and splashes, and reinforce a professional corporate image. Rubix offers a selection of durable and reusable models suited to demanding working environments. For a complete professional outfit, work coats are often paired with work trousers.

What is the purpose of a work coat?

A professional work coat protects personal clothing from dirt, dust, grease, and minor splashes. At the same time, it also helps maintain hygiene standards in sensitive environments such as laboratories, food processing facilities, or medical workplaces.

Although not generally classified as Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), work coats still contribute to workplace safety by ensuring appropriate coverage and professional attire.

Beyond protection, industrial work coats also help identify employees and reinforce a company’s professional image. In workshops and maintenance environments, long dark-coloured coats are commonly preferred, while white coats remain the standard in laboratories and healthcare settings.

How to choose your work coat according to your sector

Maintenance, industry, and mechanics

Long industrial work coats made from durable twill fabrics are ideal for workshops and technical environments. Dark colours such as navy blue or grey help conceal grease and oil stains, while chest pockets provide convenient storage for tools and accessories. In highly exposed environments, work overalls may provide more complete protection.

Food processing, laboratories, and chemistry

In hygiene-sensitive sectors, white or light-coloured coats are preferred. Streamlined designs with fewer pockets, long sleeves, and press-stud fastenings help reduce contamination risks and improve cleanliness standards.

Healthcare, medical, and service industries

Lightweight and breathable professional coats provide comfort during long working hours. Mixed or fitted cuts are often selected to improve ergonomics and freedom of movement, especially for women’s workwear.

Sensitive environments (ESD and ATEX)

Metal-free work coats fitted with plastic press-studs are suitable for environments where static electricity must be controlled, such as electronics manufacturing or ATEX-sensitive areas.

Material, colour, fit, and standards: key considerations

The most common fabrics used for professional coats are cotton, polyester, and polycotton blends.

  • 100% cotton offers breathability, comfort, and resistance to high-temperature washing. It also does not melt when exposed to sparks or heat.
  • Polyester is lightweight, quick-drying, and crease-resistant, although less breathable and more sensitive to heat sources.
  • Polycotton combines the advantages of both materials by offering durability, comfort, easy maintenance, and excellent wash resistance.

Common design features

  • Long sleeves for greater protection or short sleeves for improved mobility
  • Fastenings with buttons, press-studs, and occasionally zips or Velcro
  • Chest, lower, or internal pockets for practicality
  • Fabric weight adapted to working conditions:

    • Lightweight fabrics from 150 g/m² for heated environments
    • Medium-weight fabrics around 200 g/m² for general use
    • Heavy fabrics above 240 g/m² for colder workshops

Colours and fit

White or light blue work coats are commonly associated with hygiene-focused industries, while navy blue, grey, and black are preferred in industrial settings.

Different cuts are available for men and women to improve comfort and fit, including tailored models designed for enhanced ergonomics.

Standards

Most work coats in this category are not certified PPE and therefore are not subject to specific protective clothing standards. However, depending on the model, standards such as EN ISO 13688 (general protective clothing requirements) or EN 13034 Type 6 (limited chemical protection) may apply.

Washable or disposable work coats?

Washable work coats

Reusable models provide a durable, economical, and environmentally friendly solution. They are generally made from stronger and more comfortable fabrics and can easily be maintained through industrial laundering. However, they are not intended to protect against identified high-risk hazards such as chemicals, radioactive particles, or respiratory risks.

Disposable coats

Disposable protective coats are recommended for short-term interventions in sterile or highly contaminating environments. These garments are classified as PPE and must comply with strict safety standards.

The right choice depends on the level of risk and the frequency of use. For occasional interventions requiring higher protection, disposable protective clothing may be more suitable.

Good to know: since 1st January 2025, recycling of end-of-life PPE has become mandatory. Rubix supports professionals with turnkey recycling solutions.

Work coat, jacket, overall, or apron: what’s the difference?

Each professional garment serves a different purpose depending on the working environment and required level of protection.

  • Work coat: lightweight protection combined with freedom of movement. Worn over everyday clothing to maintain cleanliness and reinforce a professional appearance.
  • Work jacket: thicker and more structured, designed to withstand friction and minor splashes in workshop environments. Usually combined with work trousers.
  • Work overall: full-body protection for highly technical or dirty environments.
  • Work apron: focused protection for the torso and legs during stationary tasks.
