Smoothing planes are the most frequently purchased planes used for final finishing work and ideal for general work. Jack planes are used for the preliminary squaring of rough timber, and are the general workhorses for stock removal. Fore or jointer planes are used for removing the roughness and unevenness on long surfaces prior to smoothing.
