Characteristics of a TIG torch
TIG welding (Tungsten Inert Gas), also called arc welding, uses
a specific torch fitted with an electrode made of tungsten. Tungsten is
a refractory element. It belongs to the category of heavy metals and has
the advantage of not being consumed.
Composition of a TIG torch
The TIG torch consists of:
• a body (which holds the components together);
• a power cable that carries electricity from the generator to the
tungsten electrode;
• an electrode holder;
• a gas hose that supplies the shielding gas to the nozzle;
• a gas nozzle (head that diffuses the inert gas);
• and a trigger (which controls the electric arc and gas
shielding).
Tungsten electrodes are consumables that must be replaced more or less
frequently depending on usage.
Types of TIG torches
The torch is connected to cables attached to the TIG
generator, which supplies it with electricity and inert gas. Two
types of cooling are available for TIG welding torches: air-cooled or
water-cooled.
Air-cooled torches
Most of these models use a coaxial design. The shielding gas
flows through the torch body. Cable sizes depend on the duty cycle: the
higher the duty cycle, the larger the cables, which affects the torch’s
weight and handling.
Air-cooled torches are generally suitable for welding with amperages not
exceeding 150–240 A.
Water-cooled torches
Water-cooled torches have water circuits running through their
sheath. They feature smaller handles and connection cables, making them
lighter and easier to handle. These tools also help improve
productivity.
Water-cooled torches are used for welding that requires high currents
(200 to 500 A) and for frequent welding operations.

Principle of TIG welding
The torch generates an electric arc between the tungsten
electrode and the metal workpiece, creating a fusion. The process takes
place under a protective atmosphere of inert gas, which prevents
impurities from entering the metal.
Applications
TIG welding is widely used in various industries (aerospace,
automotive construction, industrial maintenance, motorsports...). It
enables precise, strong, and clean welds on different metals (stainless
steel, aluminium, carbon steel...).
How to choose a TIG torch?
The choice of TIG torch plays a key role in weld quality. It is
made based on several factors, such as:
• duty cycle;
• cooling system (air or water);
• intended welding tasks;
• ergonomics (weight, handle, hand positioning, leather
protection...);
• connectivity (connectors with 2 to 7 pins);
• modularity (there are accessories available to adapt and customise the
torch to suit needs and applications).
Duty cycle
The duty cycle is a key factor when choosing a TIG torch.
Defined by standard EN 60 974-1, it considers arc-on welding time and
the cooling time required between operations. It is expressed as a
percentage and indicates the performance of a TIG torch over a 10-minute
operating cycle at a maximum ambient temperature of 40°C.
For example, a 220 A air-cooled TIG torch with a duty cycle of 60% means
that, over a 10-minute cycle, the torch can provide 220 A for 6 minutes
before requiring 4 minutes to cool down. A 320 A water-cooled TIG torch
with a 100% duty cycle can deliver the maximum current of 320 A
continuously.
The TIG torch produces a stable electric arc that allows metals to heat
and fuse. Whether air-cooled or water-cooled, it can handle different
power levels. The choice depends on the application and the frequency of
use.
